🇮🇹 Sintesi in Italiano

🇬🇧 Summary in English

Imec and Diraq demonstrated the coherent operation and measurement of an array composed of eight silicon spin qubits. The prototype was created through a manufacturing process compatible with CMOS technologies used by the semiconductor industry, reducing the gap between laboratory experiments and possible large-scale manufacturing. The system uses an eight-qubit MOS array arranged in a linear configuration. The quantum state is conserved in the spin of the individual electrons confined in the silicon: a solution that allows us to obtain extremely small qubits and, at least in perspective, to place a large number of them on the same surface. The demonstration includes both coherent checking and reading the eight elements. The production aspect is central. The researchers exploited a CMOS process on 300 mm wafers, developed by Imec through almost ten years of work and compatible with conventional equipment used in chip factories. The approach therefore does not require the creation of a completely separate manufacturing supply chain to build the quantum devices. Bringing eight coherent qubits into an industrial CMOS process moves the quantum challenge from the laboratory to factory scale. The collaboration had already verified in 2025 that silicon spin qubits fabricated on an industrial line could achieve the required fidelity for quantum error correction
