Addio Emulatore?

🇬🇧 Summary in English

Are we heading for a glorious renaissance of cross-platform gaming? A GitHub project called AnyPS5 is promising to make PS5 games run on Windows and Linux, but here’s the kicker: it aims to do it without traditional emulation. This isn’t just another glorified patch; it’s a fundamental shift in how the magic (or engineering) happens. The core brilliance of AnyPS5 lies in its methodology. Instead of trying to simulate the entire console hardware—an incredibly resource-heavy task—it acts more like a translator. It takes the PS5 executable and converts it into the native format of the host OS, essentially mimicking the logic of successful translators like Wine or Proton. The biggest technical stroke of genius, however, is the architecture itself. Since the PS5 runs on an x86-64 CPU—the same family used by modern PCs—it bypasses the major headache of CPU code translation, eliminating huge overhead. What remains challenging is the graphical rendering, which requires translating shaders into SPIR-V for Vulkan. While the results shown so far are decidedly ‘modest’ and lack a public release date, the implications are huge. AnyPS5 appears to be tackling the problem with a superior architectural blueprint compared to older emulators. The focus is clearly on achieving near-native porting performance, which, if successful, could fundamentally change the relationship between console exclusives and the PC gaming landscape. It’s a brilliant, ambitious endeavor that keeps the PC gaming world eagerly watching for its first major stable release.
