🇬🇧 Summary in English

Google appears to be finally throwing a lifeline—or perhaps just throwing a substantial payment—to the news industry. The tech behemoth has rolled out a pilot program designed to pay publishers whose valuable content fuels its new AI search features. This isn’t a universal fix, but a curated experiment involving about a hundred participating outlets. The system works by tracking how frequently a publisher’s content is ingested by Google’s AI; the more often the content is ‘blended’ into automatic answers via AI Overview, AI Mode, and Gemini, the bigger the payout. But it’s the payout structure that raises the most eyebrows. The difference in earnings between early adopters and late joiners is astronomical. One publisher who signed up at the outset is estimated to have earned over a million dollars in a year, while a much later enrollee sees a vastly smaller check. This glaring disparity suggests that the payment formula might be as mysterious as it is profitable for a few. While Google is clearly attempting to mend its increasingly frayed relationship with content creators, regulatory scrutiny remains intense. Legal challenges and investigations from bodies like the EU and the UK (which are giving publishers the right to opt out of AI search results) prove that the foundational issue of ‘web traffic drain’ hasn’t vanished. The program might simply be a highly polished act of damage control—a calculated effort to appease critics and regulators while continuing its AI experiments.
